» Weakness: As someone keyed into women, Adonis has trouble dealing with men. Manly men, at least. All the bravado and emotional stoicism can really confuse him, though he does his best to mask it. More often than not, he just can't read men or understand why they do the things they do. He doesn't even understand himself some of the time. Generally, this lack of understanding leads to Adonis acting awkward around members of his own sex and subsequently avoiding them.
Following his seduction by Aphrodite, Adonis' perception of women has become warped. Aphrodite, one of two of his adopted mothers, made it perfectly clear that she thought of him as a potential lover. Once that was consummated, relations with Persephone, his other adopted mother, became muddled. What did she want from him? He couldn't be sure. Over time, though, he accepted her as a potential lover and did everything he could to please her, both as a son and a suitor. Obviously, this condensing of two huge female roles into one changed Adonis. He began to obsessively crave women's praise and approval. He now considers himself a tool, something for women to use to make their lives easier and more pleasurable. He's almost completely lost sight of his own goals and happiness, instead equating his worth with what women think of him. This is the main impulse behind his womanizing, a sick self-importance and a need to be needed, rather than sexual conquest.
Impulsive to the extreme, it's almost as if Adonis has no idea what consequences are. Sure, he realizes what will happen if he jumps off a building or commits a felony, but lesser acts are given no thought at all. He's awful about keeping money in his pockets, instead opting on extravagant outings and presents. He also gets injured fairly often due to some stupid decision or another. It's like his life is a sitcom- no matter what happens to him this week, he'll be back as good as new the next.
Lastly, when his mothers are both beautiful, first-tier goddesses, a boy is bound to be a little spoiled. Adonis is exceptionally lazy when it comes to doing things he doesn't want to do and will shamelessly play on his looks to keep from being putout. On top of this despondency, he's also rather naive and sheltered when it comes to the way of the world. He'll pretend he understands things, but most of the time he feels like a child that's been plopped down in the middle of an adult conversation. Which makes that he's so adept at keeping quiet and looking pretty a good thing.
» History: Myrrha, Adonis' mother, was the daughter of the king of Smyrna, Theias. Though she tried her best to contain her impulses, going so far as to attempt suicide, Myrrha, with the help of her nurse, successfully seduced her father in the dark of his bedroom. Night after night, she came to him, disguised as an anonymous woman. When finally he learned who the girl was, the king flew into a rage and chased his daughter with a knife. Myrrha prayed to the gods to hide from him, to exist somewhere between life and death. In a land far to the north of Greece, Myrrha was turned into a myrrh tree. Nine months later as a boar was scratching its tusks against the tree, Adonis was born out of its bark.
Almost as soon as he emerged, Aphrodite appeared and was startled by his beauty. She enclosed him in a case and took him to Persephone, who Aphrodite believed could keep him a secret. But, the queen of the underworld was also captivated by the boy's looks and refused to give him back to Aphrodite. Here, Zeus intervened and declared that Adonis would spend a third of the year with Aphrodite, a third of the year in the underworld with Persephone and a third of the year on his own, thus reinforcing the changing of the seasons.
Aphrodite was unhappy with having Adonis for only 4 months a year, however, and sought to seduce him with the help of her companion, Helene. Adonis succumbed and devoted his private 4 months to the goddess. He loved Aphrodite terribly, though not necessarily more than he loved Persephone, or any other woman for that matter. Aphrodite simply had more of a hold on him. And so, when she warned him against hunting dangerous beasts, he tried his best to listen. But, somewhere along the way, he forgot her warning and just so happened to come across a wild boar. During that hunt, the boar managed to gore Adonis fatally. The beast was far from ordinary and was undoubtedly sent by one of the gods as a form of vengeance. Artemis had a motive: Aphrodite had been integral in the death of her favored, Hippolytus. Ares did as well: Adonis was beloved by his paramour. And, perhaps the most upsetting of the three, Persephone had reason to kill Adonis, too: he had chosen to spend twice as much time with Aphrodite than he did with her. Whoever sent the boar was never sorted out.
As she had at his birth, Aphrodite rushed to the dying Adonis' side, but there was nothing she could do. As she cried over his corpse, her tears mingled with his blood and turned his body to anemones. After the flowers were spread across the earth, Aphrodite pleaded with Zeus to revive Adonis. Zeus complied, brought Adonis back to life as a god and declared that he would now spend half the year with Persephone and half the year with Aphrodite. Shortly following this revival, Adonis was taken by Cronus.
» Personality: Charming to the nines, Adonis hasn't had to deal with much obvious hardship in his life. Usually a wry grin and a widening of those smoky black eyes of his are enough to get him out of any scrape. Pleasing others is what he does best and he tries to stay on top of his game. Because he wants to please others so badly, he can be a bit liberal with the truth. He isn't a liar, he would insist, only a fibber. Unpleasant tiny truths he buffs out into something complimentary, and unpleasant big truths he just keeps to himself. This doesn't mean he constantly flatters everyone around him; Adonis is perfectly capable of being neutral, he just desperately tries to avoid anything which might kill the mood.
He's cheerful, but mellow, and somehow effortlessly personable, aside from a slight awkwardness around men. It's hard to dislike Adonis, unless of course people who are just a little slow annoy you. Eager to lend a helping hand, a friendly ear or a shoulder to cry on, he almost seems too good to be true. That's because he is.
If his help or friendliness isn't accepted, Adonis becomes extremely tense. He'll dwell on what he's done that would make the other person hate him (because they must hate him) and send himself into an extended sulk. He hides this behavior to the best of his ability, but sometimes it escapes. All of his emotions have a tendency of doing that. But, after an explosion, they die out fast and Adonis simply redoubles his efforts to make whoever rejected him happy.
He is also promiscuous. He's had numerous lovers, some of whom understand and even follow his system. Adonis is able to be entirely devoted to one woman so long as he is in her presence. Once she's out of the room, however, he'll stray. It's a very good system for him; it means he'll never have to be lonely. He tries to be as frank as possible about his affairs, but some women don't want to hear it. When they eventually find out, well, he bolts rather than sticking around to face the consequences.
All in all, aside from his looks and charms, Adonis is remarkably mediocre. He was never a very good hunter, but he could shoot a bow. Likewise, he has a decent singing voice, he can speak reasonably well, he can read a book and discuss it somewhat intelligently, he is polite and he is a proficient dancer. If all of his scattered, small talents were channeled in one area, he'd have something to impress others with. As it stands, he's considered by most a pretty face, a nice guy and little else.
